Bhawanigarh's Crumbling Highway: Protests Reignite Over Lingering Road Woes

The dilapidated state highway connecting Bhawanigarh and Nabha has become a symbol of neglect and broken promises, sparking renewed protests and frustrations among the residents of Bhawanigarh.

In a poignant act of protest before the 2022 elections, Narinder Kaur Bharaj of the Aam Aadmi Party planted paddy on the road, highlighting the deplorable conditions. Her subsequent victory over the incumbent Vijay Inder Singla raised hopes for change, but over a year has passed, and the road has further deteriorated.

Recent protests led by Shiromani Akali Dal leaders, including Winnerjit Singh Goldy, Rupinder Singh Happy Randhawa, Goldy Toor, and Gurmeet Singh Zaildar, mirrored Bharaj's earlier demonstration, underscoring the escalating frustration. The road, now riddled with potholes several feet deep, poses a severe risk to commuters, with two recent accidents involving trucks.

While the ruling Aam Aadmi Party claims to have allocated 45 crores for the road's improvement, locals remain skeptical. The promise of imminent tenders and construction provides little solace to a community that has endured prolonged suffering due to the crumbling infrastructure.

The pressing question remains: how much longer will the people endure the hazardous conditions of the highway? As promises continue to fall short, Bhawanigarh's residents find themselves caught in the crossfire of political assurances and the harsh reality of a road that has become one of the worst in the state.
